Twizzler Test
Some of you may have heard your student talking about being Twizzlers away from them! What in the world?!?! That's right, we have converted from using rulers to using Twizzlers to measure space.
Just kidding, kind of!
During this months classroom guidance we have been talking about space and boundaries. One of the biggest things that I have heard from students is "so and so touched me" or "they sit so close" or "they listen to what I am telling my friend." All of these scenarios come back to "my boundaries are not being respected." So how do we make sure that we respect one another's boundaries? We all get on the same page on how to implement boundaries.
We have spoken about how different people or situations warrant different amounts of space. With a sibling your space may look very different from the space needed from a stranger. In order to utilize a memorable way of converting space, we utilized Twizzlers. A Twizzler is 8 inches long. Each student was given 4 Twizzlers total and they were able to see how far 4 Twizzlers (32 inches) was and if that was a comfortable distance vs 3 Twizzlers, 2 Twizzlers and 1 Twizzler. This created an awareness of appropriate space and how to implement appropriate space for each person.
We also were able to talk about what a "Personal Space Invader" is and how we can look at nonverbal clues to understand if we are to close/too few Twizzlers to a person and if we need to adjust our spacial awareness to allow another friend to feel comfortable.
Hopefully we can all use our Twizzlers measurements to implement boundaries we are all seeking!
